How to Choose the Right Washing Machine: A Buyer's Guide for 2026

Buying a new washing machine can feel overwhelming. There are dozens of brands, hundreds of models, and a bewildering list of features to compare. Do you really need 15 wash programmes? Is a 9kg drum too big for a couple? And what on earth is an inverter motor?

After 60 years of selling and installing washing machines in Wirral, we've helped thousands of customers find the right machine for their household. Here's everything you need to know to make a confident choice in 2026.

What Size Drum Do You Need?

Drum capacity is measured in kilograms of dry laundry and is one of the most important things to get right. Too small and you'll be running loads constantly; too large and you'll waste water and energy on half-empty cycles.

Here's a practical guide:

  • 6–7 kg: Suitable for individuals or couples. Handles day-to-day washing well but you'll need to do bedding separately.
  • 8–9 kg: The sweet spot for most families of 3–4 people. Large enough for bedding and towels in a single load.
  • 10–12 kg: Best for larger families of 5+ or households that generate a lot of laundry. Also useful if you regularly wash bulky items like duvets.

Bear in mind that a larger drum doesn't necessarily mean a bigger machine. Many modern 9kg and 10kg machines fit the same standard 60cm-wide space as older 7kg models. Always check the physical dimensions, especially the depth, before buying.

Freestanding vs. Integrated

Most washing machines sold in the UK are freestanding – they sit on the floor and can be placed anywhere with a water supply and drain. They're easy to install, move, and replace.

Integrated (or built-in) machines fit behind a kitchen cupboard door for a seamless look. They're popular in modern kitchens but tend to be more expensive, have smaller drums (typically 7–8 kg), and are slightly more involved to install and replace.

If you don't have a strong preference for aesthetics, a freestanding machine usually gives you better value and more choice. We covered the pros and cons in more detail in our Integrated vs. Freestanding guide.

Spin Speed: Does It Matter?

Spin speed is measured in RPM (revolutions per minute) and determines how much water is extracted from your clothes at the end of the wash cycle. A higher spin speed means drier clothes coming out of the machine, which reduces tumble dryer time and saves energy.

  • 1200 RPM: Standard on budget models. Clothes come out noticeably wetter.
  • 1400 RPM: The most common and a good balance of performance and noise. This is what we recommend for most households.
  • 1600 RPM: Premium machines. Extracts the most water but can be louder and may cause more creasing in delicate fabrics.

If you regularly use a tumble dryer, investing in a higher spin speed will save you money on drying costs over the machine's lifetime.

Energy Efficiency: Understanding the Labels

The energy label on washing machines was overhauled in recent years, making the ratings stricter. What used to be an A+++ machine might now be rated C or D under the new system. Don't be put off by this – it's the same across all manufacturers.

In practical terms, the difference between an A-rated and a D-rated washing machine might be £20–£30 per year on your electricity bill. That adds up over 10+ years, but it shouldn't be the only factor in your decision. A well-made D-rated machine that lasts 12 years is better value than a cheap A-rated one that breaks down after 5.

Look for machines with good eco-wash programmes if efficiency matters to you. These run at lower temperatures for longer, using less energy while still cleaning effectively.

Which Brands Are Worth Considering?

We sell and repair all the major brands, so we have a good perspective on which ones hold up over time. Here's our honest take based on what we see day-to-day:

Best for reliability: Bosch and Siemens consistently come out on top. They're well-engineered, parts are readily available, and they tend to last. Samsung and LG have improved significantly in recent years and offer excellent features for the price.

Best for value: Beko and Indesit offer good machines at lower price points. They may not last quite as long as premium brands, but for the money, they're hard to beat. Hotpoint remains a solid mid-range choice with good availability of spare parts.

Best for features: Samsung and LG lead the way with smart features, large drums, and quiet operation. If you want Wi-Fi connectivity, steam cleaning, or AI-powered wash cycles, these are the brands to look at.

Whichever brand you choose, we'd always recommend buying from a retailer (like us!) that also provides installation and after-sales repair support. It makes a real difference when something goes wrong down the line.

Features Worth Paying For (and Those You Can Skip)

Worth it:

  • Quick wash programme: A 15–30 minute cycle for lightly worn clothes. Genuinely useful for busy households.
  • Delay start timer: Run your wash overnight or while you're at work to take advantage of cheaper energy tariffs.
  • Adjustable spin speed: Lets you reduce the spin for delicates without running a separate programme.
  • Anti-allergy/steam cycle: Excellent if anyone in your household has sensitive skin, asthma, or allergies.

Nice but not essential:

  • Wi-Fi/app control: Handy for checking cycle progress remotely, but not a must-have.
  • Automatic dosing: Dispenses the right amount of detergent per load. Convenient but adds cost.

Skip it:

  • Exotic programmes (jeans wash, sports wash, silk wash): Most people never use more than 3–4 programmes. Don't pay extra for 20.

What About Washer-Dryers?

If space is tight, a washer-dryer combines both functions in one machine. They're a good solution for flats and small kitchens, but there are trade-offs to be aware of.

The drying capacity is always lower than the washing capacity (typically half). So a 9kg/6kg washer-dryer can wash 9kg but only dry 6kg per cycle. This means you'll need to remove some items before starting the dryer, which isn't always convenient.

Washer-dryers also tend to be less efficient at drying than standalone tumble dryers, and the combined unit means if one function breaks, you lose both while it's being repaired. If you have the space, separate machines are almost always the better choice.

Our Recommendations for 2026

Based on what we sell and what comes back (or doesn't) for repairs, here's what we're recommending to customers right now:

  • Budget pick: Beko 8kg 1400 RPM – reliable, affordable, does the job well.
  • Mid-range pick: Bosch Series 4 9kg 1400 RPM – excellent build quality, quiet, and efficient.
  • Premium pick: Samsung Series 6 9kg – feature-packed with AI energy mode, steam hygiene, and smart connectivity.

Prices and models change regularly, so it's always worth popping into our showroom or giving us a call for the latest availability and deals.
